District 37 Night

I’d love to see you this Monday evening, February 3rd, for our District 37 Night in Annapolis! Join me, Delegate Christopher Adams, Delegate Thomas Hutchinson, and Delegate Sheree Sample-Hughes at the Market House (25 Market Space) from 5-7pm for food and refreshments, followed by the House and Senate Session at 8pm.

District 37 Night a great chance to share your thoughts with us in person and see your government in action. If you’re driving in, most street parking downtown is limited to 2 hours, but you can find garage parking nearby – we’ve even set up a QR code (see below) for easy directions to parking locations at AnnapolisParking.com.

Why Are Costs Rising On The Eastern Shore

Now, let’s talk about two issues hitting our Eastern Shore wallets particularly hard right now: skyrocketing utility bills and property assessments that would make your eyes pop.

If you’ve opened your electric bill lately and felt your heart skip a beat, you’re not alone. Folks across Caroline, Dorchester, Talbot, and Wicomico Counties are reaching out to me about these painful increases.

While the Democratic Supermajority in Annapolis wants to point fingers everywhere else, the truth is pretty simple – their recent legislation, pushed through in the name of climate action, is driving up costs for our families and businesses, just as we warned it would.

The culprits behind your rising bills include the Climate Solutions Act, EmPOWER Maryland Act, and changes to something called the Renewable Portfolio Standard. That’s a fancy way of saying utilities are being forced to buy more expensive energy sources, and guess who’s paying for it? We are.

Speaking of taking more money out of your pocket, let me tell you about what’s happening with property assessments.

Property Assessments

Our Senate Republican Caucus just sent a letter demanding answers from the Department of Assessments and Taxation about these astronomical increases. While Governor Moore claims he isn’t raising property taxes, these assessment hikes tell a different story.

If you’ve gotten one of these eye-popping assessments, remember you have 45 days to appeal it. My office is here to help guide you through that process – just give us a call.

We’re now four weeks into our 90-day session, with 811 bills dropped in the Senate already. Monday’s our deadline for introducing new bills, and then the real work begins in our committees. As always, I’m keeping my eye on protecting your interests and your hard-earned money.
