October 27, 2021

In an effort to assist the Department with recruiting new troopers, I am pleased to announce that MSP, SLEOLA and the State of Maryland have reached an agreement on the following salary enhancements:

Effective January 1, 2022, the State will increase the starting pay of trooper candidates from $35,000 to $51,000. Salary upon successful completion of the MSP Academy will be $55,704. Upon graduation, candidates with verifiable prior law enforcement experience will be eligible for advanced placement on the Troopers salary schedule on a year for year basis up to midpoint (Step 9). This is part of Governor Hogan’s recent law enforcement funding initiative to enhance public safety statewide.

As I have mentioned in past messages, our Human Resources Division is working diligently to recruit new troopers. As of today, we have 103 trooper vacancies and it is incumbent on each of us to go out and find someone we would be proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with as we protect Marylanders. These enhancements will help our cause but please reach out to our recruiters to see what you can do to support our goal of filling these vacancies. We are planning to start an academy class in January so there is no time to spare!

Thank you for your attention to this important matter and please be safe!
