OBITUARY

Michael Lee Jones, 71, of Stevensville, Maryland passed away quietly in his sleep on Wednesday, August 14, 2024 after battling pancreatic cancer. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Laura Cook Jones, as well as by his loving children, their spouses, and two grandchildren: Megan Jones, Kevin Jones, his wife Dana, and their children Liam (14) and Parker (11); and Samantha Jones Chafe and her husband Nathaniel Chafe.

Michael was born in Salisbury, Maryland on April 17, 1953 to Morris Chester Jones and Jean Dallam Jones (both deceased). He was also predeceased by his stepmother Jeanne Pitzer Jones. He was the middle child of six and is survived by his siblings Morris (JoAnne), Nancy Pyle (Gary), Jean Leach (Coston), Matthew (Lisa), and M. Patrick (Amy), as well as many nieces and nephews.

Michael grew up with his family in Marling Farms on Kent Island and graduated from Queen Anne’s County High School in 1971. Following graduation, he enlisted in the U. S. Navy and served on the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Franklin D. Roosevelt until his honorable discharge in 1975. Michael worked at the Towson State University Police Department as a Detective until 1978 when he joined the Maryland State Police. Michael met his wife Laura taking night classes at the university.

Michael and Laura Cook were married on New Year’s Eve in 1978. After their honeymoon in Walt Disney World, Michael entered the 79th class of the Maryland State Police Academy and graduated on June 22, 1979. Michael served first at MSP Barrack J, Annapolis and then MSP Barrack S, Centreville. He worked as a Trooper First Class, Resident Trooper, Field Training Trooper, and Crime Scene Investigator. After 20 years of service, Michael retired as a state trooper on July 1, 1999 and returned the same year to work with the Maryland State Police Crime Scene Unit as a civilian. Working 15 more years with the Crime Scene Unit, Michael retired a second time, now as the Crime Scene Unit Supervisor of the Eastern region.

Michael and Laura purchased their home on Kent Island in 1982, where they raised their three children and Michael lived until his passing. Michael enjoyed photography, fishing, convertibles, biking, kayaking, walks with their dog Rudy, and travel – particularly to Walt Disney World and on the 11 Disney cruises he and Laura took around the world.

God graciously carried Michael from this life into eternity as dawn broke on August 14th with his wife Laura at his side.
