The MSPAA sadly announces the recent passing of one of “Maryland’s Finest,” Sergeant Patrick J. Byrne, MDSP Retired, age 86, on January 13, 2026.
Law enforcement was truly a family calling for Patrick. His father was also a police officer, and his legacy of service continued through his son, Sean Byrne, who served as a Maryland State Trooper. Patrick’s dedication to duty, family, and public service exemplified the very best of our profession.

OBITUARY
Patrick Joseph Byrne passed peacefully at home on January 13, 2026. He was born on June 30, 1939, in Baltimore, Maryland, to the late Joseph and Alice Byrne. He graduated from Loyola Blakefield in Towson in 1957.
Patrick joined the United States Army in 1958 and served with Occupational Forces in Germany as a member of the Signal Corps following World War II until his honorable discharge in 1961.
Inspired by his father, Joseph Byrne, a Baltimore City Police Lieutenant, Patrick joined the Maryland State Police and graduated from the Academy in 1961. He was initially assigned to Waterloo Barracks (Barrack A) as a uniformed Trooper.
Known to his fellow Troopers as “PJ,” Patrick became one of the original members of the Maryland State Police Intelligence Division formed in the early 1960s. As a covert investigator, he worked a wide range of cases, including motorcycle gang activity, narcotics investigations, surveillance, and homicide.
After 23 years of distinguished service dedicated to the Maryland State Police, Patrick retired with the rank of Sergeant. He then began a second career with Lockheed Martin Aerospace, where he served as Chief of Security before retiring.
Patrick is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Johanna D. Byrne; his sister, Loretta Henderson (William); his sons, Sean (Jan), Michael (Laura), and Patrick (Gloria); seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in honor of Patrick Joseph “PJ” Byrne to the Helping Up Mission in Baltimore.
