The MSPAA sadly announces the recent passing of one of “Maryland’s Finest,” Sgt. John F. Bevard, MDSP, Retired.
OBITUARY
John Franklin Bevard
Monday, July 15th, 1940 – Sunday, September 17th, 2023
John Franklin Bevard was born in Sykesville Maryland to Wakeman S. and Emily H. Bevard, July 15, 1940. He passed away at the Dove Hospice House located in Westminster, Maryland on September 17,2023, at the age of 83, surrounded by his family. John was next to the youngest of seven children and was raised in Eldersburg, Maryland on a family dairy farm. He and his late wife, Joan Claire Bevard, married 57 years, together raised four children, teaching them the importance of family, love and faithfulness.
John graduated from Sykesville High School in 1958 and served in the U.S. Army from 1958 to 1961. Afterwards, he graduated from the Maryland State Police Academy and served and protected for 26 years.
First and foremost, John was a caring and kind man who was patient and loved unconditionally. He was a wonderful husband and father, an excellent gardener and orchardist and had a life-long passion for fishing with his children, especially Frank. John was a gifted woodworker and could repair anything. He enjoyed cooking for his family and inspired his children to be accomplished in the kitchen as well. John valued sharing evening meals together with his family and very much enjoyed playing cards with his grandchildren.
John is survived by three sisters and a brother: Ellen Roberts of Cockeysville, MD; George Harry Bevard of Detour, MD; Martha Streaker and husband, Davis, of Sykesville, MD; and Bonnie Zumbrun and husband, Bill, of Hampstead, MD. John is also survived by four adult children: Elizabeth Grigoleit & husband, Kurt, of Red Wing, MN; Franklin S. Bevard & wife, Laura, of Westminster, MD; John W. Bevard & wife, Terri, of Sykesville, MD; Ellen Sheely & husband, Vaughn, of Owings Mills, MD, as well as seven grandchildren: Caitlin Delph & husband, Bobby; Allison Kunkemoeller & husband, Eric; Richard Grigoleit; Ryan Grigoleit & wife, Sara; Katherine Grigoleit; Abby Bevard; and John L. Bevard. John had three great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
A celebration of John Franklin Bevard’s life is planned for Saturday, September 30, 2023 at 10:00AM-12:00PM, followed by a memorial service at 12 Noon at Burrier-Queen Funeral Home and Crematory, located at 1212 West Old Liberty Road, Winfield, Maryland, 21784. Afterwards, a funeral procession will take place, leading to Joan & John Bevard’s final resting place in St. James Methodist Church Cemetery. Address: 2900 Marston Road, New Windsor, MD.
