It is with great sadness that we report the loss of one of Maryland’s Finest.
Former Sgt. John Altvater, was an outstanding trooper, amazing investigator, and leader in the law enforcement community. After leaving MSP, Altvater went into the private sector. May his family know that he will always be remembered. May he Rest In Peace.

OBITUARY

John Carroll Altvater, a devoted Marine Corps veteran and esteemed member of the law enforcement community, passed away on December 10, 2024, at the age of 76. Born on January 22, 1948, in Baltimore, Maryland, John lived a life marked by service, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to his family and community.

A proud Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps, John exhibited exceptional leadership qualities and camaraderie during his military service. Following his time in the Marines, he embarked on a distinguished career as a State Trooper. He served with honor in Baltimore before relocating to Salisbury, where he dedicated over 20 years of service at the Salisbury Barracks. His career continued as a Supervising Bailiff for Worcester, Wicomico, and Dorchester counties, where he was known for his professionalism and integrity.

John was a loving and supportive husband to Jo Anne Altvater and a caring father, cherished by his family. He possessed a delightful sense of humor that brought joy to those around him, and he often found laughter in life’s moments. An animal lover, John had a special bond with his parrot, Joey, who was a beloved companion. He also shared many memories with his brother while running the House of Crabs restaurant in West Ocean City, where he showcased his passion for hospitality and community engagement.

A visitation will take place on December 19, 2024, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Holloway Funeral Home, 501 Snow Hill Road, Salisbury, MD 21804.In honoring John’s legacy, we invite friends and family to join in celebrating a life well-lived and to pay their respects to a true American hero. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
