The MSPAA sadly announces the recent passing of one of “Maryland’s Finest,” Lt. Van Cleve Holmes, III, MDSP Retired.

OBITUARY
Van Cleve Holmes, III, 81, of Strasburg, VA passed away Thursday, June 19, 2025, at Winchester Medical Center, Winchester, VA.
Mr. Holmes was born in Ohio on October 3, 1943, to the late Van Cleve and Helen Sproul Holmes, II. Mr. Holmes served with the Maryland State police as a first lieutenant for over 30 years.
Survivors include his wife, Martha Holmes; his children; Jack Lambert, Jr., Erica Troxell (Ricci), Robyn Pruett (Chris); his four grandchildren and four great grandchildren; and a special cousin Nancy McDougle Hatch.
A funeral service for Mr. Holmes was held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 21, 2025, at Stover Funeral Home in Strasburg, VA with Pastor Keith Warren officiating. Burial followed at the Riverview cemetery.
Pallbearers were Jack Lambert, Jr., Ricci Troxell, Matthew Troxell, Chris Pruett, and Gauge Pruett.
The family suggests that expression of sympathy be in the form of memorial contributions, lieu of flowers, to Shriners Children’s Hospital or St. Jude’s Hospital.
