We regret to inform you of the recent passing of Retired Lieutenant Robert McWhorter on May 3, 2026. Lt. McWhorter served the Maryland State Police for more than 27 years. He was a dedicated trooper that will be remembered for his leadership, integrity, and service to others.

OBITUARY
On May 3, 2026, Robert “Bob” L. McWhorter passed away peacefully, leaving behind a life defined by service, devotion, and a deep love for family, community, and the outdoors.
Born in Washington, D.C., Bob made his home in Gambrills, Maryland, where he lived for 38 years. He was a proud graduate of the University of Maryland, earning a degree in Law Enforcement. It was during his college years that he met the love of his life, Rosa McWhorter (née Musumeci), at a square dance in 1961. Their enduring love story led to marriage in 1968 and a remarkable 58 years together.
Bob honorably served his country as a member of the National Guard. He began his distinguished career with the Maryland State Police in 1965, serving as a Trooper until his retirement in 1992. During his tenure, he was a valued member of the SWAT team and was widely respected for his dedication and professionalism. Following his retirement from the State Police, Bob continued his commitment to public service with the Department of Corrections until retiring in 2005.
Beyond his career, Bob was deeply engaged in his community and passions. A devoted horticulturist, he was an active member of the Azalea Society of America and the Potomac Valley Chapter of the Rhododendron Society, serving both organizations as past vice president and president. Together with his wife, he cultivated a breathtaking two-acre garden at their home, featuring over 1,500 azaleas and 400 rhododendrons. Visitors traveled from near and far to walk the serene paths, bridges, and garden walls he lovingly designed and maintained.
Bob also served his neighborhood as vice president and president of his Homeowners Association, reflecting his strong sense of civic duty. Through his work with the Maryland State Police, he supported the Special Olympics and was honored to represent the state in the Torch Run.
An energetic and adventurous spirit, Bob embraced the outdoors and athletics. He enjoyed surfing, skiing, camping, softball, tennis, jogging, cycling, sailing, and running marathons. His zest for life was evident in everything he pursued.
Faith played a central role in Bob’s life. As a dedicated member of Our Lady of the Fields Catholic Church, he served as both a Minister of Care and a Eucharistic Minister. In 2010, inspired by his daughter’s courageous battle with cancer, Bob wrote a rosary for those fighting cancer—a legacy of compassion and faith that continues to bring comfort to many.
Bob also found great joy in the companionship of his beloved pet, Bingo.
In addition to his devoted wife, Rosa, Bob is survived by his son, Robert L. McWhorter Jr. and his wife, Manieka; his cherished grandchildren, Maxwell McWhorter, Dylan Thomas, Amber Weese, and Cody Thomas; and his son-in-law, Bryan Thomas. He was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Jennifer Marie Thomas.
Bob will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to family, his service to others, his deep faith, and the beauty he brought into the world—both through his actions and the gardens he so lovingly tended. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Bob’s name to the Alzheimer’s Association.
