We regret to inform you of the recent passing of Retired Corporal Thomas Edward Mullinix, age 94, on March 7, 2025. Mullinix was recognized as our eldest trooper.
OBITUARY
Thomas E. Mullinix, Sr., affectionately known as “Ed,” passed away peacefully on March 7, 2025, at the age of 94. Born in 1930 in Howard County, Maryland, Ed was a man of unquestionable integrity, immense character and dedication to his family, community and the citizens of Maryland. He was the eldest of five children and grew up in the shadow of the Great Depression, learning the value of hard work and family responsibility at an early age.
After graduating from Clarksville High School, Ed served in the Maryland National Guard and later joined the Maryland State Police as a Communications Officer. In 1951, he found his true calling as a Maryland State Trooper, assigned to the Waterloo Barracks, and dedicating nearly thirty years of his life to serving the citizens of Maryland. Known for his fearless approach to law enforcement, and firm sense of right and wrong, Ed was highly respected and admired by his peers and superiors across the state. He played an integral role in some of the most memorable and historical incidents in the state’s history, including the riots on the Eastern Shore in the 1960s and the devastation of Hurricane Agnes in the 1970s. Trooper Mullinix was always called upon, and relied upon, for his cool head, steady hand, and methodical approach to any crisis. On the date of his passing, Ed Mullinix was the oldest living state trooper in the history of the Maryland State Police.
Despite being offered many leadership roles throughout his career with the Maryland State Police, Ed chose to remain close to his family and their farm in Fulton, Maryland. He retired in 1978 as a highly decorated and respected trooper and remained on his farm in Fulton, MD, committed to the family business that had been started by his wife, Jenny. In his later years, Ed dedicated himself to his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren, community service, and leadership roles with the Howard County Fair and the Clarksville Lions Club, where he rose to the rank of District Governor. Ed considered himself a lifelong farmer, and was a member of the Howard County Fair for over 70 years.
Ed and the love of his life, his beloved wife, Jenny, were married for over 75 years. Together, they built one of the most reputable and successful bus contracting businesses in Howard County. Ed was viewed by everyone who knew him as a dependable, honest, and reliable businessman who continued to serve his community for decades.
Ed is survived by his wife, Jenny; his children, Tommy and Vonnie; five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren, as well as his extended family. He was a devoted family man who believed in providing for and protecting his loved ones. Ed’s legacy of hard work, integrity, and dedication will be remembered and cherished by all who knew him.
SERVICES
A viewing will be held on Sunday, March 16th, from 2:00 to 5:00 pm at Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville, MD. The funeral service will be on Monday, March 17th, at 11:00 am at Haight Funeral Home & Chapel in Sykesville, MD. Interment will immediately follow the service at Mountainview Cemetery, Marriottsville, MD.
