In Loving Memory of Roger Lee Layton August 5, 1953 – September 26, 2023

Roger Lee Layton, a cherished resident of Denton, MD, passed away on Tuesday, September 26, 2023, at Compass Hospice in Centreville, MD. He was 70 years old.

Born in Baltimore, MD on August 5, 1953, Roger was the beloved son of the late Robert Cosden and the late Reva Pauline Sard.

Roger’s educational journey led him to graduate from Easton High School in 1972.

Roger’s sense of duty and commitment to public service led him to the MD State Police Academy, where he graduated in March 1975. Throughout his career in law enforcement, he served at various barracks, including Brk. S Centerville, Denton Detachment, Brk. I Easton, Brk. J Annapolis, and Brk. E Salisbury.

Following his retirement from the police force in 1997, Roger continued to contribute to his community by working as an investigator for the Caroline County State’s Attorney Office from 1997 to 2002.

Roger’s passion for public service extended to his role as a Caroline County Commissioner from 2002 to 2010, where he played a pivotal role in shaping the future of his county. His dedication to his community was a testament to his love for Denton and the surrounding areas.

In addition to his distinguished career, Roger was known for his love of the outdoors. He found solace and joy in hunting, fishing, and excelled in the art of trap shooting. Roger also devoted his time to coaching Denton Little League softball for many years and later coached in a women’s softball league in Centreville.

Roger is survived by his beloved wife, Faye R. Layton of Denton; a daughter, Jaclyn S. Crawford (Chris) of Preston; his favorite granddaughter, Madison S. Weston of Denton; step-father, Ronald Sard, sister, Rena Callahan (Bobby) of Harmony, a brother, Duane Sard (Michael Anne) of Cordova; an uncle, Emory Davis of Easton; a cousin, Richard Davis (Kim) of Easton; a previous son-in-law, Mike Weston of Denton and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Roger was preceded in death by a sister, Debbie Cosden, three brothers, Michael Cosden, James H. Layton, James L. Cosden; and an aunt, Mary Jane Davis.

A memorial service to celebrate Roger’s life will be held at 12 Noon on Friday, October 6th, at the Calvary Baptist Church on Market Street in Denton, where friends may visit with the family from 10:30 AM until 12 noon. The interment will be private.
